Engineered for your needs: Meet KIRCHHOFF Automotive at IZB

How can different requirements regarding performance, weight, cost, and material concepts be translated into customized body-in-white solutions? Under the motto “Engineered for your needs,” we will provide insights into our latest developments at IZB.

From uncoated SIBORA material to a modular surface concept

With SIBORA Next Generation, we are presenting the next stage in the development of our high-strength steel technology SIBORA. In the first step, KIRCHHOFF Automotive and Volkswagen Group Innovation successfully realized the material and process development of a silicon-boron steel grade, “SIBORA,” for a modified hot-forming process in 2024. SIBORA increases crash performance through enhanced energy absorption while simultaneously reducing vehicle body mass.

In the second step, the targeted use of zinc or AlSi coatings significantly improves the corrosion protection of the SIBORA material without affecting its high strength of 800 to 2100 MPa. This enables the production of load-optimized components with locally tailored properties that are precisely matched to the specific requirements of each vehicle (see image).

This innovative approach optimally combines material performance, process reliability, and lightweight design, unlocking new potential for durable, highly resilient vehicle structures.

SIBORA with graded strength levels optimizes energy absorption in crash management

For crash management systems (CMS), our portfolio ranges from cost-efficient cold-formed steel concepts for economically focused applications to galvanized solutions offering enhanced corrosion protection and high durability.

At IZB, we are showcasing a CMS made from SIBORA with different strength levels (see image). Unlike conventional approaches, SIBORA enables the use of a single material grade for various CMS components. The bumper beam, crash boxes, and base plates can be specifically designed with different strength levels and tailored crash performance characteristics.

This allows energy absorption to be optimally distributed across the individual components, resulting in improved crash performance, high occupant protection, and an efficient lightweight design approach.

Be inspired by our latest innovations and take the opportunity to exchange ideas with our experts in person.

Meet KIRCHHOFF Automotive at IZB in Hall 5, Booth 5118. We look forward to welcoming you!
