As part of our commitment to sustainability and reducing our environmental footprint, we have launched a solar power generation system at our Querétaro facility, reinforcing our focus on a more efficient and environmentally responsible operation.
The initiative was driven by the need to incorporate renewable energy into production processes and actively contribute to reducing the environmental impact of plant operations. It also responds to the growing expectations of customers and business partners who promote solutions aligned with sustainability principles.
The project began in 2024 and, following the planning, permitting, and installation phases, officially started operations on June 23. The system currently consists of 873 solar panels, capable of supplying approximately 7% of the plant’s total electricity consumption.
During its first weeks of operation, the system generated 35.9 MWh of clean energy, resulting in savings of approximately USD 1,500 in just 14 days of operation. This early performance highlights the initiative’s potential to deliver both environmental and economic benefits over the long term.
A specialized software platform continuously monitors the system’s performance. The system tracks energy production and helps ensure the optimal operation of the solar panels, maximizing the installation’s efficiency and reliability.
As part of the project implementation, our colleagues in Querétaro received specialized training to understand the system’s operation, identify associated risks, and know the appropriate actions to take in the event of any incident. This preparation helps ensure a safe and efficient operation while also serving as a valuable reference for potential future implementations at other plants within the organization.
Beyond the financial savings, the most significant benefit lies in its environmental impact. The system is expected to prevent approximately 633 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually, directly contributing to the reduction of the plant’s carbon footprint.
The positive results achieved so far also open the door to future renewable energy initiatives within the organization. As a next step, a similar system is being evaluated for the San José Iturbide plant, with the goal of replicating the benefits achieved in Querétaro. Through initiatives like this, KIRCHHOFF Automotive in Mexico continues advancing toward a more sustainable operation, demonstrating that innovation and environmental responsibility can work hand in hand to build a more sustainable future for mobility.
